The main difference between the two options is the battery and the design. The 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is built with a 14.4 voltage NiMH battery, whereas the 2278N Pet Hair Eraser has a 14.4 voltage lithium battery, which is a longer-lasting battery. On the other hand, the 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is around twice as expensive.

However, if you want a handheld vacuum cleaner for pet hair removal with a better battery than the 1987N Pet Hair Eraser version can offer, the 2278N Pet Hair Eraser might be a better choice.

Battery

The Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is equipped with a NiMH rechargeable battery with a max runtime of 15 minutes and a charge time of 5 hours.

In general, a NiMH battery has a shorter life cycle than a lithium battery and has a longer charge time. However, the advantage of a NiMH battery, compared to a lithium battery, is that they are cheaper and this helps to keep the price of the vacuum cleaner down.

The runtime is a bit longer than for competing handheld vacuum cleaners, such as the Shark CH950UKT, which has a maximum runtime of 10 minutes, and the Shark WV200UK, which has a maximum runtime of 8 minutes.

The charge time is also relatively short (however, it still takes a long time to recharge the battery), compared to many other products. For example, the Bosch Move BHN14N has a charge time of 12-16 hours.

The battery of the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is not replaceable. This means that when the battery's life cycle is about to end, the entire device must be thrown away.

Functionality

The Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is a very simple handheld vacuum cleaner, which only has one speed setting. The speed setting and the turn on / off button is easily accessible when holding the vacuum cleaner’s handle.

The vacuum cleaner has a dustbin capacity of 0.6 liters.

Cleaning

We tested the vacuum cleaner’s ability to clean up sand and pet hair. We made the following tests:

• Test 1: We tested how much of 50 grams of sand it could pick up from a parquet floor in 10 seconds.
• Test 2: We tested how much of 50 grams of sand it could pick up from a carpet floor in 10 seconds.
• Test 3: We tested the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up pet hair from carpet.

In all three tests, we used the motorized turbo nozzle.

The results went as follows:

• Test 1: The vacuum cleaner managed to pick up all 50 grams of the sand.
• Test 2: The vacuum cleaner managed to pick up 42 grams of sand, which is a good result.
• Test 3: The vacuum cleaner picked up almost all of the pet hairs (see image from before and after the test).

Overall, the vacuum cleaner showed a really good cleaning performance.

Noise level

We measured the noise level of the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser. The maximum measured noise level was 74.6 dB, and on average, the noise level was 74 dB.

This is a bit noisy but a very common level among handheld vacuum cleaners. In comparison, we measured the maximum noise level of the Bosch Move BHN14N to 73.5 dB.

Dimensions and weight

The Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser measures:

• Height: 11 cm
• Width: 17.1 cm
• Depth: 41 cm

This is a common size. We measured its weight to 1270 grams without the nozzle connected and 1370 grams with the motorized turbo brush on.
This weight is common among handheld vacuum cleaners and is sufficiently low that the vacuum cleaner can be operated by anyone.

Design

The Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser consists mainly of two parts: The main part is where the battery is placed and where you carry- and control the vacuum cleaner. The front part is where the filter and dustbin are located. You can detach the front part, remove the filter and then empty the vacuum cleaner easily.
