• If you are looking for a handheld vacuum cleaner suitable for pet hair removal, the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is a good choice. It removes pet hair efficiently due to its motorized rotating brush. However, if you are not looking for a handheld vacuum cleaner suitable for pet hair removal, you can save some money by picking another model, such as the Shark WV200UK.

Who is the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser not suitable for

• The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is a relatively expensive handheld vacuum cleaner. If you are on a tight budget, it might be better to pick a more budget-friendly model. The Shark CH950UKT, and the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser, are two budget-friendly options that are suitable for pet hair removal and have a good cleaning performance. However, they both have a shorter runtime.

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser vs. the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is an upgraded version of the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser. They both come with a motorized rotating brush and are both relatively heavy.

However, the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is built with a lithium battery, whereas the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser is built with a NiMH battery. Lithium batteries have a longer lifespan but are also more expensive, which means the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is more expensive.

Battery

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is equipped with a 14.4-voltage lithium battery. The battery has a maximum runtime of up to 18 minutes, however, the runtime is shorter if you use the motorized brush.

An 18 minutes runtime is longer than most other handheld vacuum cleaners. By comparison, the Shark CH950UKT has a maximum runtime of 10 minutes, and the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser has a 15-minute runtime.

The charge time of the battery is 8 hours which is a common charging time for handheld vacuum cleaners.

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is not built with an interchangeable battery.

Functionality

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser is suitable for cleaning furniture, carpets, inside your car and hard-to-reach areas. It comes with a motorized turbo brush which is particularly well-suited to pet hair removal.

The vacuum cleaner is not able to pick up liquids and has only one suction power.

It has a dustbin capacity of 0.65 liters, which is relatively large and means you don’t have to empty the dustbin that often. You can empty the dustbin by removing the front of the vacuum cleaner.

The vacuum cleaner has a three-layered filter system. The filters are washable, which makes them easy to clean, and it comes with an extra filter.

Cleaning

We have tested the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser’s ability to clean up in three different cleaning tests:

• Test 1: We test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up 50 grams of sand in 10 seconds on a parquet floor.
• Test 2: We test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up 50 grams of sand in 10 seconds on a carpet.
• Test 3: We test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up pet hair on a carpet.

The cleaning tests went as follows:

• Test 1: The vacuum cleaner managed to pick up all of the sand. All the handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested have managed to do this.
• Test 2: In this test, the vacuum cleaner was able to pick up 40 grams of sand (80%), which is a very good result and among the best among the handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested. In comparison, the Shark WV200UK only managed to pick up 70% of the sand.
• Test 3: The vacuum cleaner did an almost perfect job in this test.

Overall the vacuum cleaner performed very well in the cleaning performance tests.

Comfort

The vacuum cleaner’s handle is comfortable, however, it feels a little bit heavy (we measured the weight at 1191 grams without the nozzle mounted on), especially if the motorized brush is attached when it weighs 1451 grams.

The motorized brush is a bit difficult to attach, however, this seems to be a common issue across all the handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested that come with a motorized brush.

The vacuum cleaner has a charge indicator to see when it is charging and fully charged.

Accessories

The Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser comes with the following nozzles and brushes:

• Motorized rotating brush: Suitable for pet hair removal (rotates 4800 times per minute).
• Crevice nozzle: Suitable for cleaning in hard-to-reach areas.
• Furniture brush: Suitable for cleaning upholstery.

In addition, the handheld vacuum cleaner comes with an extra filter and a charger.

Noise level

According to Bissell, the 2278N Pet Hair Eraser has a noise level of 68 dB. However, in our test of the noise level, the noise level was measured at a maximum of 76.4 dB and 76 dB on average. The difference in the noise level from our test, compared to that of Bissell’s, might be the method of measurement.

We measured the noise level of the 2278N Pet Hair Eraser at an arm's length and with the motorized brush attached. The noise level of the handheld vacuum cleaner is higher than for many other models we have tested. For example, did we, in comparison, measure the noise level of the Bosch Move BHN14N to just 73.5 dB.

The vacuum cleaner measures:

• Height: 19.7 cm
• Width: 14.3 cm
• Depth: 43.8 cm

It is roughly the same size as many similar types of handheld vacuum cleaners. However, there are smaller options out there, such as the Shark WV200UK or the Shark WV270UK.
