Who should buy iRobot Roomba i7

  • If you live in a large house, the Roomba i7 might impress you since it can save up to 10 different floor maps and allows you to name various rooms in your home so that you can specifically enable the robot to clean a particular room only.
  • If you have long hair or furry pets in your home, the hair-resistant main brush of the Roomba i7, which utilizes rubber bristles, will lessen your worries about cleaning hair tangles from the brush.
  • If you have carpets or rugs in your home, the Roomba i7 might come in handy since it has a Dirt Detect technology that will increase suction on areas with concentrated dirt, which is common in carpets. The design of the main brush also allows it to come in constant contact with the floor and provides a deeper cleaning which is helpful, particularly for carpets.

Who should NOT buy iRobot Roomba i7

  • If you are on a tight budget, you might want to check other robot vacuums that can also do the job at a lower price, such as the Eufy RoboVac G30.
  • If you are looking for a robot vacuum with an auto-empty bin, the iRobot Roomba i7+ might be for you, as it has exactly the same robot model as the Roomba i7 but with a docking station that can empty its dust bin.

This is our verdict of the iRobot Roomba i7 based on several hours of research of reviews from both experts and users.
Updated 13-05-2021

The Roomba i7 and iRobot Roomba i7+ have exactly the same robot. The “+” sign in the Roomba i7+ signifies a Clean Base that will automatically empty its dustbin. The Roomba i7 is a cheaper alternative if you don’t have any issues with manually emptying the dust bin frequently since the Clean Base of the Roomba i7+ is expensive.

The Roomba i7 utilizes an Imprint Smart Mapping feature. This camera-based navigation system allows the robot vacuum to learn the layout of your home, determine the best path for cleaning, and create an accurate map within the app. However, creating an accurate map requires a few test runs, unlike the Roborock S6 MaxV that can accurately create a precise map after its first run with the help of its LIDAR navigation. Moreover, the drawback of a camera-based navigation system is that it cannot operate well without enough light. So, it is not ideal to use the Roomba i7 at night when you are asleep.

The Dirt Detect technology of the Roomba i7 can detect high concentrations of dirt and increase its suction power to provide a thorough cleaning. On top of that, the dual rubberized main brush of the Roomba i7 is designed to come in constant contact with uneven floors and is resistant to hair tangles. Any hair caught in the main brush goes to the sides, so it is easier to clean, unlike robot vacuums with bristles that you need to cut the hair that is caught in the rollers manually.

The Roomba i7 can detect if the dust bin is full and sends you a notification on your phone. However, there is a tendency that some dirt, like pet hairs, can get caught in the area where the sensor is. So, as a result, it will detect that the dust bin is full even if it is not.

Another drawback of the dust bin of the Roomba i7 is that it is small. It only has a 400 ml capacity, which is not a problem if you have the Roomba i7+ since it has a Clean Base that can automatically empty its bin. But in the case of the Roomba i7, it might annoy you that you have to constantly empty the dust bin since it has a small dust bin and an inaccurate “full dust bin” sensor.

The app of the Roomba i7 offers a lot of features, such as selective room cleaning, cleaning schedule, virtual barriers, etc. You can also name particular rooms, which can come in handy if you use voice integrations, such as Alexa or Google Assistant. For instance, you can command it to clean the kitchen or any room you like using your voice in, unlike other robot vacuums that only use voice integration for basic commands such as start, stop, and go back to the docking station.

However, there are several complaints about the internet connectivity of the Roomba i7. The robot keeps losing connection to the internet and sometimes fails to follow voice-integrated commands.

Overall, the Roomba i7 has a great vacuuming ability and ensures to clean your home thoroughly. However, it is not perfect and also has flaws. So, if you have a lot of money to spend, the Roomba i7 might be an excellent investment.
