Verdict
The Roborock S7 MaxV is a powerful robot vacuum with accurate and advanced navigation, good cleaning results, and AI assisted obstacle avoidance. It is particularly well-suited for households with carpets due to its carpet recognition and mop-lift feature, and it is a good choice for pet owners. The robot is also intuitive to use, with a lot of functions available through its app. However, it is expensive and the obstacle avoidance doesn't avoid all items perfectly. The cleaning results on carpeted floors are only okay, and the water tank is small. Overall, the Roborock S7 MaxV is a good choice for those who prioritize powerful suction and advanced navigation in their robot vacuum.
The Roborock S7 MaxV is an upgrade to the Roborock S6 MaxV and is an improvement in terms of navigation abilities, suction power, and mopping capabilities. The S7 MaxV is way more powerful than its predecessor, with a maximum suction power of 5100 Pa, whereas the suction power for the S6 MaxV is 2500 Pa and is equipped with both VibraRise technology (which lifts the mop when a carpet is detected), and sonic mop vibration for better mop cleaning.
The Roborock S7 MaxV differs from the Roborock S7 model by being more powerful (the suction power of the Roborock S7 is just 2500 Pa), and by being equipped with front cameras which utilizes object recognition. This makes the S7 MaxV version better for carpet cleaning and avoiding obstacles (and thereby also better for households with pets).
The robot Roborock S7 MaxV is also available with additional attachments in the versions:
Roborock S7 MaxV Plus: This version comes with the exact same robot but also comes with an auto emptying station to automatically empty the dust container.
Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra: This version comes with the exact same robot but has the addition of an advanced auto emptying station, which can both automatically empty the dust container, wash the mop, dry the mop and refill the water tank.
We have tested the Roborock S7 MaxV in accordance with our robot vacuum cleaner test methodology 1.1, which consists of objective test criteria and subjective test criteria.
Who should pick the Robock S7 MaxV?
The Roborock S7 MaxV is a good robot vacuum for those who have carpets. It has a higher-than-average suction power and can automatically lift the mopping pad when it detects a carpet.
The Roborock S7 MaxV is a great choice for those who want a robot vacuum with a mop. It vibrates up to 3000 times per minute, allowing it to effectively remove tough stains on the floor. Furthermore, the robot is built with “VibraRise technology” which enables it to lift its mop 5 mm when it detects a carpet, which is a really good feature if you have low-pile carpets.
The Roborock S7 MaxV is a good choice for pet owners, due to its obstacle recognition, strong suction power, and anti-hair tangling main brush made of rubber. In the settings, you can choose “Home with pets” which improves the robot's obstacle recognition ability but reduces its cleaning efficiency slightly.
If you have a large house, the Roborock S7 MaxV is a good pick. It cleans efficiently and can cover up to 300 m² on one charge. Additionally, the robot can store a map for up to 4 floors, which also makes it well-suited for households with multiple floors.
Who should not pick the Roborock S7 MaxV?
The Roborock S7 MaxV is not the best choice for those who are on a budget. Instead, the Roborock E5, or the Roborock S7 are more affordable models that still deliver good results.
If you want a more automated cleaning, you should consider a robot vacuum cleaner with a dirt disposal unit included. You might want to consider the Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI, or the Roborock S7 MaxV Plus instead. However, the advantage of the Roborock S7 MaxV is if you are unsure if you want a dirt disposal unit, you can buy it later with this model.
Navigation
The Roborock S7 MaxV is equipped with a LiDAR navigation system and a double camera. This works very efficiently; the robot is able to map the rooms very accurately and quickly and clean all areas in an efficient manner. In one cleaning session, the robot will have mapped the entire floor, identified most objects and furniture, identified the carpets, and divided the rooms on the floor.
The robot is built with Reactive AI 2.0, which enables it to recognize and avoid objects. It's very practical, as it means you don't have to clear the house completely beforehand (especially useful if you have a lot of cables).
Object avoidance test
The avoidance technology works very well, but not perfectly. In our test, it didn’t recognize the cable and just pushed it forward. However, it managed to recognize and avoid 4 objects. In our avoidance test the robot had to avoid and maneuver around the following 5 objects:
A fake poop
A can
A rolled up cable
A water bowl (filled with water)
A piece of cloth
The result was as follows:
Fake poop: Avoided
Can: Avoided
Rolled up cable: Not avoided
Water bowl (filled with water): Avoided
Piece of clothing: Partly avoided
Navigation light
In dark areas, the robot turns an LED front light on, for better visibility to detect obstacles. This is a practical feature that is not seen in many robot vacuum cleaners.
App
The app setup is easy to set up and very intuitive. In our review of the Roborock S6 MaxV, we have previously become familiar with Roborock's app, and have praised it highly.
The Roborock S7 MaxV enables more functionality than the Roborock S6 MaxV, for example by enabling 3D map-view, matrix view, being able to control the scrub intensity for the mop, etc.
In addition, it also has functions that are seen in other robot vacuum cleaners in the same price range, such as:
Scheduling
Room selected cleaning
Zone cleaning
Ability to save multiple floors
Real-time remote viewing
No go zones
Additionally, you can change the following settings:
Obstacle avoidance settings
Carpet settings
Robot voice settings
Remote viewing settings
General robot settings
Map settings
Remote viewing
The Roborock S7 MaxV enables remote viewing within the app. This enables you to use the robot as a surveillance camera, which can be handy in some cases: For example if you want to see how your pet is doing with the robot vacuum cleaner when you are not at home, or if there is an object on the floor that you would like to take a closer look at (it might be a poop).
Battery
The Roborock S7 MaxV is equipped with a 5200 mAh Lithium battery. This is a powerful battery and the robot is able to clean most households in one charge. Furthermore, the robot is built with a “Recharge & Resume” function which means it will go back to the charge station to charge when the battery is low, and continue cleaning when it has been charged if it didn’t finish the whole cleaning in the first session.
The runtime is specified to 180 minutes in Quiet mode (the longest-lasting mode) by the manufacturer.
In our test, the robot took 48 minutes to clean an area of 38 m². It cleans roughly 0.8 m² per minute (or 48 m² per hour) in my household’s layout. This might vary from household to household.
Cleaning
The robot does a very good job at cleaning due to its powerful suction power, its great navigation system, and its superior object recognition.
We have tested the robot's cleaning ability in three different tests:
50 gram rice clean up from parquet floor
50 gram sand clean up from parquet floor
50 gram sand clean up from a carpet
In all three tests, the robot was set to “Max mode”.
The results were the following:
Parquet floor, 50 g rice: 49 g collected (98 %)
Parquet floor, 50 g sand: 50 g collected (100 %)
Carpet, 50 g sand: 30 g collected (60 %)
Parquet floor test
The parquet floor cleaning was almost perfect. The robot managed to get perfectly into the corners and get almost all of the rice and sand.
This is how it looked in our test of clean up of rice on parquet floor:
Carpet cleaning test
In the carpet cleaning test the robot didn’t manage to pick up that much sand in the carpet cleaning test, despite its high suction power.
The robot only managed to collect 60% of the sand.
Carpet cleaning
The robot is very good at detecting carpets and increasing its suction power to “max mode”, whenever it encounters a carpet.
In the app you can see if it has detected the carpet. You can easily set the carpet as a “No-go-zone” in the app, or select it as a “Misidentified carpet”. Also, in the App-settings you can specify more settings for how it should handle carpets.
The strong suction power means that it can clean the carpets more thoroughly than many other robot vacuum cleaners. It is also equipped with VibraRise which means the mop is lifted 5 mm when it detects a carpet (you can read more about this in the section about its mopping ability).
Mopping
The big advantage of the Roborock S7 MaxV, compared to many other models on the market, is the robot's mopping ability. It has multiple advantages:
VibraRise technology (liftable mop): It is able to detect carpets and lift its mopping pad, so the mop doesn’t hit the carpet. The mop is lifted 5 mm. This feature only works on low-pile carpets, however, it works very well.
Sonic vibration (scrubbing technology): It scrubs your floor, which gives better cleaning results and makes it able to remove more stubborn stains from the floor.
VibraRise technology
The VibraRise technology enables the robot to clean both carpets and hard floors in a single cleaning session (as long as your carpets are low-pile). This is a very handy function and solves a problem that exists with many other robot vacuums that do not enable both floor and carpet cleaning in the same cleaning session. For most robots, the mop will drag along the carpet and might cause discoloration.
If you have high-pile carpets you have the option to create “No-mop zones”, which prevents the robot from cleaning certain areas when the mop is attached.
Sonic vibration
The robot is further built with sonic vibration technology. This enables the mop on the robot to vibrate up to 3000 times per minute, giving a more in-depth cleaning with the mop. In the app you can choose between 3 scrubbing intensities:
Low: 1650 vibrations per minute
Medium: 2300 vibrations per minute
High: 3000 vibrations per minute
Mopping cleaning results
We tested the robot’s ability to clean dry stains from a parquet floor by recording its performance against three different stains:
A dry stain of ketchup
A dry stain of coffee
A dry stain of sour cream
In the test the robot did a perfect job at removing the coffee stain, and a good job on the creme fraiche and the ketchup (they weren’t completely removed)
The test showed that the robot vacuum cleaner performs very well when it comes to mop cleaning, but it still cannot completely replace a traditional mop.
Noise emission
The noise emission is specified as 67 dB by the manufacturer in “Balanced mode”.
We tested the robot vacuum cleaner's noise emission in three different modes and noticed the maximum noise emitted. The result was as follows:
Maximum noise emission measured in “Quiet mode”: 61.1 dB
Maximum noise emission measured in “Balanced mode”: 63.1 dB
Maximum noise emission measured in “Max mode”: 73.5 dB
Our test results show that Roborock S7 MaxV is a quiet robot vacuum cleaner, except when it is in “Max mode”, where the noise emission increases significantly. The high noise emission is probably due to its strong suction power. We measured its predecessor, the Roborock S6 MaxV, significantly lower (69.4 dB in Max mode).
Setup
The setup was easy and without complications.
The Roborock app guides you through each step when you want to set the robot up with the app.
Base unit
The Roborock S7 MaxV doesn’t come with a dirt disposal unit, it just comes with a regular charge base. However, it is possible to buy a dirt disposal base unit afterward.
If you want to buy the Roborock S7 MaxV with a dirt disposal unit take a look at the Roborock S7 MaxV Plus (it comes with a simple dirt disposal unit), or the Roborock S7 MaxV Ultra (it comes with an advanced dirt disposal unit).
Size and design
The height of the Roborock S7 MaxV is 9.65 cm. It is a bit taller than models without a LiDAR laser tower, but with this height the Roborock S7 MaxV is still able to clean underneath most furniture.
The robot measures 35.3 cm in width and 35.0 cm in depth. This size is the most common among robot vacuum cleaners.
The Roborock S7 MaxV is equipped with a rubber main brush, which resists hair tangles (in contrast to its predecessor the Roborock S6 MaxV, where the main brush consisted of both hair and rubber.
We measured the main brush of the Roborock S7 MaxV to have a width of 16.7 cm.
Shape
It has a round shape, which is the most common shape among robot vacuum cleaners. Some robots are built with a D-shape (for example the Neato Botvac D7 Connected), which has the advantage that they clean faster, due to a larger main brush and they typically have a larger dustbin.
The advantage of a round shape is it has good maneuverability and is good at getting out of tight spaces.
Climbing ability
The climbing ability is set to 2,0 cm by the manufacturer.
Replacements and maintenance
In the Roborock app you can follow the recommended replacement and maintenance of:
Filter (lasts around 150 hours).
Main brush (lasts around 300 hours).
Side brush (lasts around 200 hours).
Sensors (need regular cleaning).
Mop (needs to be replaced regularly).
Filter
The Roborock S7 MaxV is equipped with a washable EPA 11 filter.
Conclusion
We really liked this robot vacuum cleaner. So far it is the best robot vacuum cleaner we have tested. Even though the technology within robot vacuum cleaners has come very far, it is still not ready to take over the floor cleaning at home completely. For example, there is still room for improvement in terms of carpet cleaning and the avoidance technology is still not perfect. However, this robot is a step in the right direction.
