The Severin HV 7144 is a budget-friendly handheld vacuum cleaner that can pick up liquids, and has the convenience of being charged in the car. It offers a long runtime of 18 minutes. However, it feels plasticky and cheap, and is not as powerful as some other options.
The Severin HV 7144 is a simple and budget-friendly handheld vacuum cleaner. We have reviewed and tested the vacuum cleaner in accordance with our test methodology 1.1 for handheld vacuum cleaners.
Who is the Severin HV 7144 suitable for
If you are looking for a simple and budget-friendly handheld vacuum cleaner for small cleaning tasks, the Severin HV 7144 might be the right choice. On the other hand, if you need to have more demanding cleaning tasks carried out, such as picking up pet hair, it might be better to choose a more expensive model, such as the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser, or the Shark CH950UKT.
If you want to pick up liquids, then this is a good choice of handheld vacuum as it is built to do this (unlike many other handheld vacuums).
The Severin HV 7144 comes with a 12 V charging cable that fits into a car’s cigarette lighter so you can charge the vacuum cleaner in the car. This makes it suitable for taking with you on the go, e.g. for camping.
Who is the Severin HV 7144 not suitable for
The Severin HV 7144 is built to be charged on the wall in a wall bracket with a charging cable. Some may not like the design and would rather have a better looking handheld vacuum out in the open. If you are one of them, then take a look at the Shark WV200UK, which is a better looking handheld vacuum cleaner.
If you are looking for a powerful handheld vacuum cleaner, this is not the right choice. Instead, look at the Shark WV270UK, or the Severin HV 7146, which are more powerful choices.
Severin HV 7144 vs. Severin HV 7146
The Severin HV 7146 is an upgraded version of the Severin HV 7144. It is upgraded by:
More powerful battery: The battery of the HV 7146 is an 18.5 volt lithium battery, whereas the HV 7144 only has a 7.4 volt lithium battery.
Longer runtime: The runtime for the HV 7146 is up to 30 minutes, whereas it is only up to 15 minutes for the HV 7144.
More attachments: The HV 7146 has a turbo brush, which is particularly good for animal hair removal. This attachment is not included with the HV 7144.
LED lighting: The HV 7146 is built with LED lighting, which means that the dirt can be easier to spot.
In short: if you are looking for a more powerful handheld vacuum cleaner, the HV 7146 is a better choice, however, this model is also around twice as expensive.
Battery
The Severin HV 7144 is built with a 7.4 volt lithium battery. The battery is not interchangeable, so when the life of the battery is over, the whole unit has to be thrown away.
The battery has a relatively long charge time of 10 hours and a long runtime of 18 minutes. The charge time is long, however, not longer than many other handheld vacuum cleaners, and is not a problem for the vast majority of buyers.
The runtime of 18 minutes is relatively long.
Cleaning
We carry out a series of cleaning tests on all the handheld vacuum cleaners we test, in accordance with our test method 1.1 for handheld vacuum cleaners.
We didn’t test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up liquids.
We have carried out the following cleaning tests for the Severin HV 7144:
Parquet floor cleaning test: In this test, we test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up sand on a parquet floor. We lay 50 grams of sand in a 1-meter-long line on a parquet floor and see how much it is able to pick up in 10 seconds.
Carpet cleaning test: In this test, we test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up sand on a carpet. We lay 50 grams of sand in a 1-meter-long line on a carpet and see how much it can pick up in 10 seconds.
Pet hair removal test: In this test, we test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up animal hair from a carpet. We rub dog hair into a blanket and test the vacuum cleaner's ability to suck it up in 10 seconds.
The result for each of the tests went as follows:
Parquet floor cleaning test: The vacuum cleaner did a perfect job in this test and was able to collect all of the sand. All the handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested have managed to do this.
Carpet cleaning test: The Severin HV 7144 was able to collect 36 grams of the sand (72%), which is a decent result. In comparison, the Shark WV200UK collected 70% of the sand, and the Bissell 1987N Pet Hair Eraser managed to collect 84% of the sand.
Pet hair removal test: The vacuum cleaner also did a decent job in this test, however, it is not able to pick up the stubborn hair in the carpet. If you are looking for a vacuum cleaner there is able to do that, we recommend you look for a model with a motorized cleaning brush.
Overall, the vacuum cleaner did a good job in the cleaning tests.
