In terms of value for money, the Severin HV 7146 is considered a good option.

The Severin HV 7146 is an upgraded version to the popular HV 7144 model. We have tested and reviewed the Severin HV 7146 in accordance with our test methodology 1.1 for handheld vacuum cleaners.

The Severin HV 7146 (Video: Reoverview)

Who is the Severin HV 7146 suitable for

  • With the Severin HV 7146 you get powerful suction and a long operating time, for a relatively good price. On the other hand, its appearance is not very nice and it feels very plastic. If this is something you don't care about, then the HV 7146 is a great choice, which offers good value for money. It is ideal for cleaning smaller areas, such as the inside of your car.

Who is the Severin HV 7146 not suitable for

If you are looking for a handheld vacuum cleaner with a nice design, the Severin HV 7146 might not be a good choice, because it looks clumsy and plasticky. Instead you might want a better-looking handheld vacuum cleaner, such as the Shark WV200UK, or the Shark WV270UK.

The Severin HV 7146 vs. the Severin HV 7144

The Severin HV 7146 and the Severin HV 7144
The Severin HV 7146 and the Severin HV 7144 (Image: Reoverview)

The Severin HV 7146 is an upgraded version of the Severin HV 7144. The upgrades include:

  • It has a more powerful battery, which provides more powerful suction and longer runtime (30 minutes instead of 18 minutes).
  • It has two power settings instead of one.
  • It comes with a motorized rotating brush, which is suitable for pet hair removal.

Overall, if you want a powerful and more versatile handheld vacuum cleaner, the HV 7146 is the best choice, however if you want a more simple and budget-friendly handheld vacuum cleaner, the HV 7144 is the best choice.

Battery

The Severin HV 7146 is equipped with a powerful 18.5 voltage lithium battery. The battery has a capacity of 2200 mAh, and a relative short charge time of 5 hours. In general, handheld vacuum cleaners equipped with a lithium battery have a shorter charge time than models built with NiMH batteries. Also, lithium batteries have in general a longer life span. The disadvantage of lithium batteries, however, is that they are more expensive than NiMH batteries, which is also why lithium batteries typically only are used among mid and high-priced handheld vacuum cleaners.

The Severin HV 7146 has a maximum runtime of 30 minutes in eco-mode, which is longer than for most other handheld vacuum cleaners. In ‘Turbo’ mode its runtime is a maximum of 20 minutes, which is also very good. In comparison, the Shark WV270UK only has a maximum runtime of 15 minutes, and for the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser it is only 18 minutes.

The Severin HV 7146 does not have an interchangeable battery.

Cleaning performance

We have tested the cleaning performance of the Severin HV 7146. We test all handheld vacuum cleaners in three different cleaning tests:

  • Parquet floor cleaning test: In this test, we test how well the vacuum cleaner can pick up sand from a parquet floor.
  • Carpet test: In this test, we test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up sand from carpet.
  • Pet hair removal test: In this test, we test the vacuum cleaner’s ability to pick up pet hair from a carpet.

You can read more about how we perform the tests here.

The results in the tests was as follows:

  • Parquet floor cleaning test result: In this test the vacuum cleaner managed to pick up all of the sand. All handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested have managed to do this.
  • Carpet test result: In this test the vacuum cleaner did a very good job and managed to pick up 43 out of the 50 grams of sand. This is a very good result and shows this vacuum cleaner has a strong suction power. In comparison, the Shark WV200UK managed to pick up 35 grams of sand, and the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser managed to pick up 40 grams of sand.
  • Pet hair removal test result: In this test the vacuum cleaner did a perfect job and managed to pick up all of the pet hair.

Overall, the vacuum cleaner did a very good job in our cleaning performance test.

Functionality

The top of the Severin HV 7146
The top of the Severin HV 7146 (Image: Reoverview)

The Severin HV 7146 differs from many other handheld vacuum cleaners by being able to clean up liquids. It comes with a rubber nozzle, which is suitable for cleaning up liquids.

The vacuum cleaner has two power options:

  1. Eco
  2. Boost

Most other handheld vacuum cleaners only have one power option.

The vacuum cleaner can handle many different cleaning tasks, because of its included brushes and nozzles. It has LED light which makes the cleaning easier in dark areas.

Comfort

The vacuum cleaner weighs 1093 grams without attachments and 1255 grams with the motorized rotating brush attached. It doesn’t feel heavy in the hand, unlike other handheld vacuum cleaners we have tested with a motorized brush (for example the Bissell 2278N Pet Hair Eraser felt heavy when the motorized brush was attached).

The vacuum cleaner has a large dustbin with a capacity of 0.65 liters.

Noise level

The maximum noise level measured for the Severin HV 7146

We have tested the noise level of the Severin HV 7146. The noise level was measured at an arm's length from the vacuum cleaner. We have measured the average and maximum noise level for the two power settings of the HV 7146. The results were as followed:

  • Eco mode: The average noise level was measured to 70 dB and the maximum noise level was measured to 70.4 dB.
  • Boost mode: The average noise level was measured to 77 dB and the maximum noise level was measured to 78.6 dB.

This test shows the vacuum cleaner is quiet in Eco mode, but becomes very noisy in Boost mode. In comparison, the Shark CH950UKT has an average noise level at 76 dB.

Accessories

The Severin HV 7146 comes with various accessories, which enables it to handle several different types of cleaning tasks. It comes with the following accessories:

  • Motorized rotating brush (Turbo brush): This brush rotates and is ideal for cleaning upholstery and removing stubborn pet hair. When this brush is used, the runtime of the vacuum cleaner is reduced.
  • Rubber nozzle: This nozzle is suitable for pick-up of liquids. It is able to pick-up up to 150 ml of liquids.
  • Crevice nozzle: This nozzle is suitable for clean-up of hard to reach areas.
  • Suction brush: This brush can be attached on the crevice nozzle, and is suitable for clean-up of sensitive areas to prevent scratches, such as on your computer keyboard.

It must be charged in the included base station, which can be hung on the wall. You can place the brushes and nozzles on the base station.

Size

The vacuum cleaner measures:

  • Height: 13.5 cm
  • Width: 12.5 cm
  • Depth: 44.0 cm

It has a similar size as many other vacuum cleaners. If you are more into a small handheld vacuum cleaner, you might prefer the Shark WV200UK, or the Shark WV270UK.
